EXPANSION JOINTS

Bridge expansion joints are designed to allow for continuous traffic between structures while accommodating movement, shrinkage, and temperature variations on reinforced and prestressed concrete, composite, and steel structures. Bridge expansion joints stop the bridge from bending out of place in extreme conditions and also allow enough vertical movement to permit bearing replacement without the need to dismantle the bridge expansion joint.

RJ Watson has developed and installed Expansion Joint Systems on multitudes of bridges, highways and parking decks throughout the world. The Silicoflex Joint Sealing System is an innovative highway and bridge expansion joint system that is cost effective, easy to install and offers a long, effective sealing life.

RJW Finger Joints are cantilevered or simply supported steel tooth bridge expansion joints; they are composed of pairs of independent elements with parallel teeth provided in lengths from 3 feet to full roadway widths.

SilTron is a two-part, cold-applied, self-leveling, fast-curing, ultra-low modulus, 100% silicone material designed for sealing of concrete pavement joints experiencing thermal movement. ZED Seal is an enhanced co-polymer foam designed to give greater resilience and higher tensile and tear performance.

SILICOFLEX SYSTEM

The Silicoflex System consists of an inverted ‘V’ shaped, preformed, extruded silicone rubber seal, with a single component silicone locking adhesive and a primer. Two beads of silicone locking adhesive are used; one above and one below the silicone rubber seal to ensure a tenacious, watertight and continuous seal. The system also comes with a single part silicone adhesive and a primer, which creates a tremendously strong bond to the joint header. Silicoflex is used in both new constructions with an armoring system or without. The system has been used heavily in bridge preservation activities and has been installed on hundreds of bridges and highways worldwide.

By selecting one of four individual Silicoflex glands, any joint ranging from 0.5″ to 6.5″ will be sealed. The ability of the system to bond to new or existing steel extrusions, concrete, or elastomeric concrete joint headers makes it the most versatile system on the market today with an incredible track record of performance and longevity on existing installations that are over 20 years’ old on major highways across the US.

BRIDGE BEARINGS

A bridge bearing is a component of a bridge, which typically provides a resting surface between bridge piers and the bridge deck. The purpose of a bearing is to allow controlled movement and thereby reduce the stresses involved; movement could be thermal expansion or contraction, or movement from other sources such as seismic activity. There are several different types of bridge bearings, which are used depending on a number of different factors including the bridge span.

Testing at the University of Buffalo’s prestigious MCEER (Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research) has demonstrated that disc bearings are the technological preference for mitigating the stresses on the structures and sub-structures in seismic and non-seismic events.

RJ Watson designs and manufactures custom disc bearings with the ability to withstand vertical loads ranging from 10 to 14,000 kips (44.5 kN – 62,275 kN). RJ Watson structural bearing devices have rotational capabilities in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. Thousands of RJ Watson bridge bearings have been tested and installed worldwide.
